Retinal vein occlusion is a disorder of retinal blood flow, often associated with high blood pressure, diabetes, glaucoma or coagulation disorders. It can affect the central vein or a branch vein, leading to sudden and severe reduced vision, sometimes associated with distorted vision.
The main risk is macular oedema and the proliferation of abnormal vessels (neovessels).
Treatment is based on intravitreal injections anti-VEGF or corticosteroids, which reduce oedema and stabilise vision.
Controlling cardiovascular risk factors is essential to limit recurrences and preserve vision.
