Ophthalmologist
Keratoconus is a disease that causes progressive thinning and deformation of the cornea (cone-shaped conea). This deformation leads to irregular myopia and progressive astigmatism, resulting in reduced vision that is often poorly corrected by glasses.
Intensive rubbing of the eyes is strongly implicated in the development of this condition. Diagnosis is based on corneal imaging examinations.
The treatment depends on the stage: rigid lenses improve vision, while cross-linking (photopolymerisation of corneal collagen) slows down the progression.
In the advanced forms, it may require intracorneal rings or a corneal graft. Regular check-ups with an ophthalmologist are essential to preserve vision.
