Ophthalmologist
Glaucoma is due to damage to the optic nerve, often linked to excessively high intraocular pressure. It is divided into 2 categories:
The open-angle glaucoma, the most common form, develops slowly and silently, causing progressive visual field loss. It is treated with hypotensive drops, laser (SLT) and surgery if advanced.
The angle-closure glaucoma is rarer and sometimes manifests itself suddenly with eye pain, visual impairment and nausea: it is an ophthalmological emergency. Treatment is aimed at reducing eye pressure using hypotensive eye drops, laser (iridotomy) or surgery. An iridotomy is sometimes necessary to prevent the development of this type of glaucoma.
Regular screening by an ophthalmologist is essential, especially after the age of 40 or if there is a family history, as untreated glaucoma can lead to blindness in the long term.
