AMD is a degenerative disease of the macula, the central area of the retina responsible for fine vision. It appears after the age of 50 and exists in two forms
Dry AMD, the most common type, develops slowly as the retina thins. There is currently no cure, but specific food supplements can slow its development.
Wet AMD is more aggressive, linked to the formation of fragile neovessels under the retina. Treatment is based on intravitreal injections of anti-VEGF, which block these abnormal vessels and stabilise vision. Early detection considerably improves visual prognosis.
It should be noted that tobacco significantly impairs the visual prognosis of this disease.
